It’s a sinking feeling you get the moment you realize something is very wrong with your bank and/or credit card account. Someone has used your account..someone has your information..I believe its..its..identity theft?
What do you do to protect yourself and correct this grievous mistake? Here is your checklist.
1) Immediately close the account that you know, or believe, has been tampered with. Each bank has a fraud department that handles identity theft claims and will assist you in closing the accounts. Follow their instruction; some will want you to submit your claim in writing. Its always a good idea to create a good paper trail in these situations so keep a file of your correspondance and any other pertinent paper work.
2) File a report with the local police. Yes, this is necessary. A copy of the police report will be given to the financial institution and backs up your claim.
3) Place a fraud alert on yout credit report with each of the three credit reporting companies; they will provide you with a free copy of your credit reports. The toll free numbers are: Equifax 1800-525-6285, Experian 1-888-397-3742 and Trans Union 1-800-680-7289.
Its very unsettling when this happens and it can happen to anyone. This summer someone took my checking account for over $1500. I used my debit card to make an on-line purchase. Because I acted swiftly, I got it all back. The key is to act fast so that you limit the damage that is done and to watch your accounts on a regular basis.
Well, that’s the inside secret for today. As always, we would love to have your feedback. Simply leave a comment below or share this post on Facebook.
